Aether v0.3.0: notes, handouts and characters in one panel

Documents and the Wiki become the Library, and a handout can be put on your players' screens with one press. The full notes for this release.

The Library panel with a folder tree of nineteen entries on the left and a lore page open beside it.

If you have ever opened Documents, failed to find the thing you wrote, and then found it in the Wiki, this release is for you. There is one panel now, one set of words for who can see what, and a way to put a page in front of the table without telling anyone where to go looking.

What changed

The Library

Documents and the Wiki
One Library panel
Visible / Hidden, and Shared with players / GM only
No access, name only, can read, can edit, at every scope
The Sheet panel
A Sheet view of the entry itself
Raw fields, like a token's x and y
Records, one button in the header

The link graph is gone. Backlinks appear on the entry you are reading, which is where you were when you wanted them. Browse the same set three ways, by folder, by type, or by what you changed last, and search covers entry names and the text inside pages rather than only titles.

Showing a handout

Grant access, then show it, as two steps
One step, because showing implies access
Everyone or nobody
Everyone, or the players you pick

Revealing a document used to make it visible if a player went looking for it. Now the page opens on their screens, and a bar tells you how many have closed it.

Editing a page

Headings flattened to body size when you saved
A real scale that survives Done
Alignment the toolbar could set and nothing stored
Stored, and still there when you come back
A block-type control that toggled
A menu: paragraph, three heading levels, quote, both lists

A reference you place with @ can now be changed. Clicking one while editing offers to point it somewhere else instead of navigating away from the sentence you are writing.

Why

The two panels were never two products. They were one product cut along a line you cannot see from the outside: whether a record happened to carry a particular capability. A journal appeared in both, with different buttons in each, and nothing on screen told you which to open.

One vocabulary was the harder half. Two panels was the visible problem. The quieter one was that the same permission had two names: a document row said Visible or Hidden, and a page inside it said Shared with players or GM only. They are different scopes, and nothing said so, so it read as one switch in two places. Four words cover both now, everywhere, and a page can be more private than its entry but never more open.

Folders got the same treatment. A folder is an optional shelf and nothing more: an unfiled entry still appears at the root of the tree, in its type group, and in Recent. A campaign that never makes a folder works exactly as well as one that files everything.

Showing a handout had the opposite problem: half of it already existed, and it was the wrong half. A GM could raise a document's visibility and the server would project it per person correctly. What was missing was the push, so revealing something only helped if the player went looking for it.

The same reasoning made access part of the act rather than a checkbox beside it. Pushing a document a player is not allowed to read is a bug waiting for a bad moment.

At the table

Press / to search, or cmd N to make something: a note, a folder, or any type your system and modules provide, grouped by where they came from, so you can see that Location came from the Worldbook and not from us.

Click an entry to read it. Double-click to rename it, in the row you are looking at rather than in the other pane. Press cmd E to edit, type / for blocks, @ to reference another entry and # to print a live value from one. A reference resolves at read time, so renaming a character relabels every mention of them.

When the table should see it, Show now puts the page on their screens and grants access in the same step. A bar above the Library counts dismissals as they happen. Closing it on a player's side leaves the handout in their library, so "can I look at that again" has an answer that is not you.

What it does not do

There is no link to an entry yet. A URL that addresses a panel and a selection does not exist, so rather than ship a Copy link button producing something that does not reopen, we cut the button.

Records is a demotion. Editing a token's coordinates by hand still works and is one click further away. That is the intended trade, and a real cost for the person most likely to notice.

Undo does not cover typing. Deleting a page can be taken back with cmd Z. Retyping one cannot, because text edits are not recorded. A larger answer with redo and a history you can look at is being designed rather than patched.

Stopping a presentation does not take back access. It takes the page off their screens. If you want it private again, change who can see the entry.

A saved layout will not have the Library in it. The panels it replaces no longer exist, so a dock arranged before this release opens without them. View then Library adds it, or Reset layout rebuilds the default.

Where to find it

The View menu, then Library. It is in the default layout for new worlds.
